A fungus is a type of organisms, just like plants or animals – it is a “kingdom”.

They are defined by their ability to make spores – which is sending out new fungi as single cells which are sent into the air. They also feed on organic (biological) matter from their environment – for example getting nutrients from decomposing leaves.

A fungus is an organism that feeds on organic matter and reproduces through spores. They can be made up of one cell, or many cells, and cannot photosynthesise.

Organic matter is basically like compost – it is a substance made up of waste products from the environment and broken down parts of once living things.

A spore is like a seed, except it does not need to be fertilised. It is an exact copy of the parent fungus.
