• Question: My Grandad Is 90 and He has no white hair, he looks as if he is 25. what sort of gene is he carrying that does not allow him to grow old?

      Sounds like your grandad is very lucky! And he probably led a very healthy life too.

      As we get old lots of things will happen to our hair and it depends on the genes we have. Our hair might get thinner, the hair cells might stop making pigments (colours) or if we are unlucky it might fall out. Some people start having their hair fall out at age twenty, others may never lose their hair – it just depends what genes they have.

      The genes are carried on the mothers genes – you will carry whatever genes your dad has. For example, my dad has grey hair at age 60, so my sons (when I have kids) will keep their hair and it will go grey.

      I’ll put this down to a healthy life, Baldness and white hair are very much genetic. Nobody fully understands which genes just yet, this is why cures are not 100% effective, unless you are Wayne Rooney and have a transplant of hair from another part of your body….

      It is generally accepted that baldness comes from your mothers side….my Granddad on my Mum’s side is bald…
