      Hello 🙂

Yes they did! Well they wanted me to become whatever I wanted to be, but it was very helpful because before she had me, my Mum was a scientist too! I found Chemistry quite hard at school because there is a lot of stuff to remember so my Mum helped me a lot with testing/ quizzing me before my exams and helping me revise stuff!

Yes! My parents also wanted me to become whatever I wanted to be. When I said I wanted to do science they helped me apply for university and really encouraged me. However, they couldn’t help me much with school work because my dad works with computers, and my mum is a ballet dancer.

My Dad did chemistry at University, and still works in science – so was always keen for me to continue on the family thing of doing science. My Mum is completely different – she is a teacher and an artists. But my Mum was never allowed to do what she wanted to do at school, and so she was really enthusiastic for me to do what I was interested in.

My Dad was great to have around to help with Chemistry and Physics, but no one in my family knew any Biology. My Mum usually helped test me if I needed it, and actually found that she loves Biology too – so now my Mum is always keen to get me to tell her more about it. She also always gets me to go to her school and talk about my research so that she can encourage other people to love science too. I would love to go around schools all day meeting people like you so that I can encourage you all to become scientists like us!

For my part the answer is no. My mum pushed me do whatever I wanted in life but could not help much as she do not have any degree, even not high school degree. My father do not have any diploma neither and in addition he tried to discourage me because researcher do not win a lot of money. He asked me to change my mind even when I was major at Uni. They are finally proud of my diploma and of the fact i am working for Oxford University but they could not help and did not want. my university studies have been paid by the French state (I am french), I got a grant because of my results. My parent s could not afford Uni…. All of that to say if you really want something you can have it but you have to work hard for. My personal rule in life is “create your own luck”!

I was very very lucky to have been able to study and make a life out of something which I am very very interested in.

My parents, would have done their best to help me whatever I chose to do, In science or otherwise. they continue to do so. (Thanks Mum and Dad)

When I was young I visited Museums with them, and played in the garden. Even at a young age, all these things played their part in helping me develop such interests.
They were very supportive and provided lots of encouragement for me when I was at school. They even proof-read my application for University! This helped me make the best impression I could.

Now, a few years later they are proud to have a Scientist in the family, even if they no longer fully understand the work that I do!
